Where the trunk stood decides it, not where the branches were

This comes up more than you would think, particularly in older Woodstock neighbourhoods where the trees predate the fences. The short version of how it generally works in Georgia: ownership follows the trunk at ground level.

If the trunk stood entirely on one side of the line, it was that owner’s tree, and the stump is theirs to deal with. Branches overhanging your garden and roots running under it never made it partly yours. A neighbour is generally entitled to trim back to the boundary, but trimming is not ownership.

If the trunk genuinely straddled the line, it is usually treated as jointly owned, and neither owner can simply remove it without the other. In practice that means the cost of dealing with what is left is a conversation rather than an entitlement.

Where it turns contentious is damage. If a tree was visibly dead or dangerous and the owner was told so and did nothing, that changes the picture considerably when it falls. If it was healthy and a storm took it, that is generally treated as an act of nature and each owner deals with what landed on their side.

None of the above is legal advice, and a boundary dispute that actually matters is worth twenty minutes with a Georgia property solicitor rather than an article. But it is the framework most of these conversations start from.

The practical answer, which resolves the overwhelming majority of these: get one quote for the whole job and split it. A boundary stump is one grind, one callout fee, and one machine. Two separate jobs on the same stump is not a thing, and two neighbours each paying half of one callout is cheaper for both than either of them paying a full one later. It is also a much better conversation to have over a fence than the alternative.
